Light Weight Filling

KEMIA EPS Foam is a lightweight engineered fill material widely used in construction projects where conventional fill materials, such as soil, sand, or stone, may not be suitable due to challenging site conditions. These conditions may include soft or loose soils with insufficient bearing capacity, as well as structures where heavy loads over concrete slabs must be minimized. Compared with traditional fill materials, EPS is significantly lighter and can be up to approximately 80 times lighter, depending on the type of conventional fill being replaced.

The use of KEMIA EPS blocks offers substantial advantages by significantly reducing vertical loads on the underlying structure or soil, while also minimizing the risk of long-term settlement.

Due to their extremely low weight, EPS blocks can be easily handled and installed manually. This eliminates or reduces the need for heavy lifting equipment and machinery, helping to simplify construction activities and lower overall project costs.

Furthermore, the reduction in dead load can lead to lower structural demands and, consequently, reduced concrete requirements. This provides additional opportunities for material savings and overall cost optimization.

KEMIA supplies pre-formed EPS blocks manufactured to suit specific project requirements and typically available in standard dimensions and shapes. When modifications are required on site, the blocks can be easily cut and shaped using portable hot-wire cutters or conventional chain saws.

Thanks to its high compressive strength, KEMIA EPS can accommodate a wide range of design loads. Typical applications include bridge abutments, retaining wall systems, and general lightweight fill applications where lateral loads, difficult ground conditions, construction constraints, or project schedules make conventional fill materials less practical. EPS can also be installed around underground pipes and culverts to reduce both vertical and lateral soil pressures.

KEMIA EPS blocks combine excellent workability, durability, and structural performance, making them an efficient lightweight fill solution for modern bridge and infrastructure construction. Their use can significantly reduce concrete consumption and overall construction costs while improving project efficiency. In addition, KEMIA EPS Foam is manufactured to meet and exceed the applicable technical requirements specified by relevant American standards.
